“You can achieve anything you put your mind to, Kedrick Son, tell me what you want to be when you get older.” Being a child, he did not know to respond. Later on in life when he turned three, she said “Son, what do you want to be when you get older?” He told her a teacher. When he was in the third grade she called him and his brother to her room; most of the time when they got called to the room it wasn’t anything good behind it, so he was nervous and scared. That’s when she said “Boys, I have cancer and I don’t know how much longer I am going to be around here.” On February 3, 2005, the doctors called and said, “Mr. Person she’s gone.” When he heard that his heart dropped.
I was that that little boy and that woman was my mother. I thought my life had hit a dead end, and I said to myself “if she’s dead I don’t want to be here either.” Dealing with my mother’s death was not easy, but there was nothing I could do about it. My life hasn’t always been easy. Losing a parent is something I never want anybody to experience. I can say I am finally at peace with losing her. It took me while and after almost 10 years of her being gone, I am finally at a place where I can cry if I need to and then look up and say thank you, for all you done for me. If it is one thing I can remember my mother said to me before she died was “Keddy, you have the power and greatness to achieve whatever you put your mind to.” Teaching has been my passion and in my blood all my life. Helping others is what makes me feel good and great on the inside.
When my mother gave me those encouraging word I said ok I know what it is time for me to do. I made a vow I would help others anyway I could. I now help my church when we have our summer youth camp by tutoring kids in math, science, and social studies. My mother always said helping others in life will make us stronger as individual. That is why I want to become a teacher because I would be able to give back to my community and give kids the education they deserve. Teaching is something I am passionate about doing, I love being able to be there and talk to the kids when they need a shoulder to lean and cry on. I am going to be they for them just like someone was there for me when I needed them.
I deserve this scholarship because I own the paramount educational values that will guide me throughout my educational journey. I have a clear idea in mind of what I aspire to do with my life, and that makes everything much easier for me. Confidence is the best word to describe myself during this time of life. I am going to a great school that I love, have amazing friends, and have been raised with parents who I want to make very proud. My academic goals include maintaining a 3.0 GPA as an undergraduate and earning a Secondary Science Education degree from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. From there, I plan to eagerly apply for jobs, as I am tremendously excited about this degree and what it entails. I am pursuing my passion, and that is what it is all about.
Education has always been extremely important to me. I realize how tough it is out there in the global economy and understand that in order to be successful in life you need to earn everything and put in your sweat, blood, and tears. I believe I possess the qualities to do this. I have been supplied with beneficial qualities such as cooperation, determination, and diligence. My motivation comes in the form of what is to BECOME. I look forward to stepping into my first salary job and feeling accomplished. I will do my very best to make sure I complete my goals in life in order to live a comfortable life.
